Congratulations Graduates
This represents the closing of one chapter and the start of another and we are so proud of you. It’s very exciting to look ahead to the future, especially when you are approaching a specific goal, so as you look forward to this occasion there are some very important guidelines to keep in mind in order to complete your senior year and become eligible to participate in Graduation (May 11, 2019).

Here you will find all the information you need as you prepare to “Depart to Serve”.

Presidential Senior Reception
Tickets are available for pick up Monday, April 29, 2019 at 9am through Thursday, May 9th by COB.

Each graduating Senior must be on the approved list of graduates and must provide a form of identification (OU ID, driver’s license, etc.) in order to pick up their tickets.

Ordering Regalia
Students should order their graduation regalia online at Please do not change the address as your cap and gown will be delivered to the bookstore.   You will be able to purchase extra tassels (if you are a dual degree recipient), diploma frames etc.

Please note after ordering your cap and gown, you must visit the Office of Student Accounts to make your graduation fee payment of $339.00. The deadline for this payment is March 8, 2019.

Invitations may be purchased online, at, at an additional cost.

Parents and Guests

Is there a Graduation rehearsal? If so, when?
Yes, there is! There is one scheduled rehearsal to be held at the Oakwood University Church on May 9 at 11:30am. Attendance is mandatory.

When/Where can I pick up my Cap and Gown?
You can pick up your cap and gown at the Graduation Fair on March 19 at the Oakwood University Bookstore. If you aren’t able to do so on the 19th, the office will assist you on the 20th.

How do I know if I qualify to graduate with honors?
In order to graduate with honors, students must meet the following GPA requirements

Honor GPA Requirement Recognition
Honorable Mention Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25 Displayed in commencement booklet but not on diploma, no cord
Cum Laude Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 Displayed in commencement booklet and on diploma, 1 cord
Magna Cum Laude Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.75 Displayed in commencement booklet and on diplomas, 2 cords
Summa Cum Laude Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.90 Displayed in commencement booklet and on diploma, 3 cords


When will I receive my official diploma?
Diplomas will be mailed out on June 30, 2018. Please call the Registrar’s office for more information.

Can I get approved for graduation if I show proof that I am registered for my transfer course and/or the school Registrar or the instructor sends a letter to verify my course information?
No, all transfer courses are due by April 1st in order to receive graduation approval.

Is there assigned seating for parents & family at graduation?

Can my parent come down on the floor and take a picture with me receiving my degree from the president?

Can I participate in graduation services without a marching card?
No, if you lose your marching card, it is imperative that you contact a Registrar’s Office representative prior to the service in order to participate.

Am I permitted to decorate my graduation cap?
Yes, only within the parameters of the guidelines for cap decoration after the Consecration service on Friday evening.

When will my degree be mailed?
June 30th

How do I request verification of my graduation for my family to be approved for international travel?
Submit a completed verification letter request, selecting the Anticipated Graduation Date box, to the Registrar’s Office.

Am I permitted to wear jewelry of any sort during my participation in graduation services?
Wedding bands are the only approved jewelry to be worn during graduation services. You will be told to remove any other jewelry in the graduation line.

Am I permitted to switch places with someone in the graduation line?

How do I make sure my degree is mailed to my current home address?
Check the address listed at the top of your Course and Fee Statement. If the address is incorrect, visit the Registrar’s Office and complete a Change of Address Form.
